The A.F.L. Vase

The A.F.L. Vase was a competition for clubs in the bottom two divisions of the league, i.e. the Second and Third Divisions. When the competition began in Season 114 these two divisions had 22 clubs each. The two teams deemed to be the highest seeds, i.e. two of the clubs that had been relegated from the First Division the previous season, were given byes through the First Round. The remaining 42 clubs were split into North and South regions, and then into seven sections of three. Each club in these sections played the other two clubs once, one at home and one away. The club with the best record in each of the seven sections in each region proceeded to the regional quarter-finals, along with the club that had received the bye. The regional quarter-finals and semi-finals were one match affairs, with extra-time and penalties if necessary. The regional finals were played over two legs, and the winners progressed to the overall final (sometimes called the Grand Final), played at Wembley. When the lower divisions increased to 24 clubs each, the format changed and there were now eight sections of three in each region, and two clubs progressed from each section into the Second Round (Round of 16). From there the rules were as before, with the Second Round, Quarter-Fnals and Semi-Finals in each region being single match affairs, and the regional finals being played over two legs.

The competition continued for around forty seasons and was last played in Season 156.
