Season 166 Season 168

The 167th season of the A.F.L. began with the Premier Cup, which was won by Tottenham Hotspur against Reading in the final, as described below.

In the Premier Division, Liverpool once again suffered the ignominy of being pipped for the title by Arsenal after having had a commanding league earlier in the season. From early on it was evident that Liverpool were to be strong contenders, as they bult up at 13-point lead at the halfway stage and hit Fulham for six at home and away, as well as Bolton at home, and had also beaten nearest rivals Arsenal 6–2. Surely on this form they had to win the title finally? However, it all turned sour once more as results turned bad with losses at home to Wigan, Norwich and West Ham, whilst Arsenal put on a run of form, taking 32 points from their last fourteen games. Arsenal clinched the title in the penultimate round with a 3–1 win at West Ham as Liverpool lost at 2–1 at Old Trafford to a struggling Manchester United. It remains to be seen if the Reds can muster the strength to challenge for the title again next season.

Reading were the most notable performers of the season. After having reached the final of the Premier Cup, they finished the season with an impressive run that secured them fourth place and a place in the Euro-League plus a triumph in the A.F.L. Cup final, where they defeated Fulham 4–2. Newcastle also had a satisfying season, finishing third to qualify for an automatic place in the Euro-League group stage.

Chelsea started badly and were as low as 18th at one stage, but results picked up and they put up a challenge for European qualification. They missed out, however, being just pipped by Tottenham who gained a place in the Europa Cup along with Sunderland. The Manchester clubs had a poor season, with United finishing 14th and City in 15th place. West Ham went down unluckily along with Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers, who returned to Division One after just one season in the Premier. The will be replaced by Swansea and Middlesbrough, who won automatic promotion to the Premier Division, along with Leicester, who beat third-placed Blackburn, who were the favourites to go up, 3–1 in the play-off final.

Premier Cup

The Premier Cup is a short, pre-season competition contested by the top sixteen teams in the Premier Division in the previous seasons's final table. It is seeded according to a 16-team bracket, so that in the intital draw the top eight teams are at home, against the lower eight teams. The higher seeded teams have a greater chance of home games later in the competition, but if a lower seeded team beats a higher placed one, then that team gets the home game if the winners of that tie are scheduled to get one. For example, in the first match it is team 1 versus team 16. Whoever wins that tie gets to play at home against the winners of team 8 versus team 9. All ties are played at the home ground of the club that comes first in the bracket, up to and including the semi-final. The final, however, is played at Wembley.

Reading surprised champions Arsenal by defeating them 1–0 on their own ground, winning home advantage in the next round as a result. Liverpool shot six past Blackpool and Chelsea were surprised by Everton who won 2–1 at the Bridge. Manchester United and Tottenham progressed as expected, but United lost at home to Everton in the next round. Reading won again in the second round, this time defeating Manchester City 3–1 at home, winning them a home game against Everton in the semi-final. Liverpool needed penalties to dispatch Norwich after a goalless 2 hours at Anfield. Spurs won against Fulham to earn the remaining semi-final spot at Liverpool.

Reading continued to impress by defeating Everton 3–1 at the Madejski to reach Wembley, while Spurs won at Anfield to join them. Reading did well to hold Spurs to a 1–1 draw after 90 minutes, but a brace of goals in extra time gave Tottenham the first trophy of the season.
