Season 178 Season 180

Season 179 began with a victory for Hearts in the Summer Cup, who beat Airdrie in the final.

In the league, Celtic, Motherwell and Aberdeen set the pace in the First Division and were all well ahead of the rest of the field in the initial stages of the season. Motherwell continued to have good form throughout the middle of the season, but Celtic kept pace with them and pulled ahead by three points by the 24-match stage. Celtic finished strongly and clinched their 32nd title with a decent 65 points. Motherwell faltered in the latter stages, allowing Aberdeen, who were challenging for the title at one stage, ease into second place, albeit 8 points adrift of the champions, Celtic. Motherwell did manage to hold out for third place, only one point short of Aberdeen. Last season's champions, Rangers, had a disastrous season and could only manage to finish in tenth place. At the bottom, St Johnstone looked to be heading, rather surprisingly, for a relegation spot, but a 3—3 draw at home to Dundee United saw them safe in the final match and thus consigned United to the second tier next season. Airdrie only needed a draw to avoid the relegation play-off (and put St Johnstone into that position) but they lost 1—3 at home to Ross County on the last day of the season.

In the Second Division, Dunfermline started well with a 100% record after 8 games, with both Ayrshire sides, Kilmarnock and Ayr United, in the chase. Ayr United continued with good form, eventually taking the lead and pulling ahead in the last third of the season. They finished top with an excellent total of 73 points, and 11 ahead of Dunfermline, who also won promotion to the First Division. Kilmarnock, Hibernian and surprise qualifiers Stranraer, contested the play-offs with one of last season's promoted teams, Airdrieonians. Airdrie won the play-offs thus denying the Second Division sides the chance of promotion this season. Albion Rovers, who were promoted into the Second Division last season, had an excellent season, only failing to qualify for the play-offs on goal difference. By contrast, Stenhousemuir survived on goal difference, Arbroath and Stirling Albion being the sides leaving the league this season.

The final of the Albion Cup was contested by the top two sides in the league, Celtic and Aberdeen. Aberdeen won their sixteenth cup, winning 3—1 in the final.
