Season 179 Season 181

Season 180 began with the Summer Cup, and the final was once again contested by Hearts, last season's winners, and Motherwell. Motherwell won the trophy with a 3—1 victory.

In the league Ross County and St Mirren started well and led the table for the first 12 matches. Rangers subsequently got into their stride and were the on-form team for most of the rest of the season, and clinched their 34th league title with four matches to play. Celtic had an indifferent start but slowly improved as the season progressed, and eventually managed to secure second place and a berth in the Euro-Cup next season. Ross County continued in good form and, despite a challenge from Partick Thistle in the latter stages, were able to secure third place, however unfortunately they did not manage to secure a Euro-Cup berth due to Hearts winning the Albion Cup.

At the bottom, St Johnstone, Falkirk and newly promoted Ayr United occupied the bottom three positions for most of the season. With one match to play Falkirk were third from bottom, one point ahead of St Johnstone and two ahead of Ayr United. Ayr lost their final game 0—2 at home to St Mirren, so they were doomed to relegation. A win for Falkirk would have secured their place in the Premiership but they had to play Celtic, and they succumbed by a 1—2 scoreline. As St Johnstone had a vastly superior goal difference to Falkirk's, they only needed a draw in their final game, but they faced a difficult task at Aberdeen, although the latter had had an indifferent season, finishing in ninth place. As it is, the Perth side secured a 1—0 victory, which was enough to keep them in the Premiership for another season.

In the Championship, Dundee United had an excellent start out of the blocks and never looked back, being the on-form team for the first half of the season. Kilmarnock moved in behind them and by the second half of the season it did not look like any other team would challenge them for the promotion positions, and so it proved to be. Livingston, only promoted from League One last season, had an excellent season and finished a creditable third, albeit 11 points behind Kilmarnock. Dumbarton, relegated from the Premiership last season, finished reasonably well in fourth place. Hibernian had another difficult season, their home form being particularly disappointing — they only won three times at Easter Road — and only managed to finish in seventh place.

At the bottom end of the table, Peterhead and newly promoted East Fife occupied the bottom three places for most of the season, and were joined by Raith Rovers in the latter stages. The Kirkcaldy side were comprehensively beaten by champions Dundee United 4—1 in the final game and thus dropped into League One. Peterhead were second bottom on the final day, two points behind East Fife, and had to travel to Leven for the final match — only a win could save them from the drop. The Aberdeenshire side managed a gutsy 1—0 victory, however, so East Fife dropped back to League One along with their neighbours from Kirkcaldy. Arbroath and Forfar Athletic will replace them in the Championship next season.

The Albion Cup was won by Heart of Midlothian, their 28th win of the famous old trophy, meaning that they are still the second most successful club in the competition, and only two wins behind the most successful club Celtic. However it was the Edinburgh side's first win in the competition for twenty seasons. They defeated St Johnstone 2—1 in the final.
