Season Summary

The 180th season of A·F·L Chart Soccer began with the Premier Cup, which was won by Liverpool.

Liverpool continued their good form by winning their first ten games in the Premiership, at which point they had a four point lead over last season's champions, Tottenham Hotspur. The Merseysiders faltered, however, allowing Tottenham to sweep into the lead, and a serious of disastrous results for Liverpool combined with an excellent run of form for the north Londoners mean that after 20 matches they had opened up a massive 18-point lead. West Ham were also in good form early in the season, reaching third place after 15 matches, but dropping off to fifth by the 20-match stage. At the bottom at the halfway stage were Middlesbrough, Brighton and Southampton, with West Brom, Burnley, Swansea and Hull just ahead of them in the lower end of the table.

In the second half of the season, Tottenham continued in scintillating form as the challengers faltered, and had clinched the title, their 16th, with 7 matches still to play. In fact, it was a record-breaking season for Tottenham. They became only the second team ever to complete a Premiership season unbeaten, emulating the feat of Manchester United as long ago as Season 75. On that occasion, United had won 30 matches and drawn 8, giving a total of 68 points, which was a record for 2 points for a win and would have equated to 98 points inder the current system, which has never been bettered. This time, however, Spurs won 33 matches and drew 5, giving a total of 104 points. Under 2 points for a win that would have been 71 points. In fact, the North London club are beginning to monopolise the title, having won it six times in the last ten seasons. Arsenal finished second, a full 30 points behind their closest rivals, whilst Liverpool, who had looked bright early on in the season, finished third. Notable also were the performances of West Ham, who finished fourth and clinched a place in the Euro-Cup, and newly promoted Huddersfield, who finished in sixth place. Manchester City were the other qualifiers for the Euro-Cup in fifth place.

At the bottom, it became a tussle between five teams - Burnley, Southampton, Brighton, Swansea and Middlesbrough - to avoid the drop. Middlesbrough, after occupying the bottom spot until matchweek 27, finsihed strongly and eventually avoided the drop in 16th place by three points. Brighton finished even more strongly, finishing 13th, leaving Swansea, Burnley (having only come up last season) and Southampton to drop into Division One.

In Division One, Sheffield Wednesday and Q.P.R. were the early pacesetters, whilst Leicester, who had a disappointing start with only four points after five games, came into form and were soon challenging for the top positions. Watford also had a good first half of the season, along with surprise contenders Aston Villa and Norwich. At the halfwayd stage Wednesday still held top position, one point ahead of Villa, and a good run of form by Bournemouth saw them in third place, 2 points behind Villa. Watford and Leicester were a further point behind, with Q.P.R., Norwich and Fulham in the remaining play-off positions. At the bottom, Leeds and Derby occupied the bottom two places, while Birmingham, although in the third relegation spot, had a considerable points advantage over the other two and were just two points behind Ipswich, Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

In the second half of the season, Sheffield Wednesday continued well and held onto second place, whilst Bournemouth finished in good form and clinched the title with two games remaining. The play-offs were contested by six teams in the new format, and were won by Watford, who beat Fulham 2—0 in the final. At the bottom, Leeds, Derby and Birmingham were unable to recover their form and dropped into Division Two. It was Derby's second relegation in successive seasons.

In the Cup, Liverpool reached their second final of the season, but finished second best to Tottenham who won the double with a 2—1 victory.
