The E.F.U. Euro-Cup

The E.F.U. Euro-Cup is the "secondary" cup competition for clubs and is intended as a way into Europe for those clubs that missed out on qualification for the Euro-League. It also allows for European competition for winners of national cup competitions and a consolation route for some of the clubs eliminated from the Euro-League qualifying stages.

Qualification

Originally, back in the days when there were around 32 countries in the E.F.U., qualification was for two clubs from each league, irrespective of the size of the country, so there were usually around 64 clubs taking part in the competition. The first competition was played in Season 96, and it has always tended to be a bit more "democratic" than the Champions' Cup, with winners such as Partick Thistle from Scotland, Vicenza from Italy and Sunderland and Birmingham from England. In more recent years, qualification has been for between one and three clubs per country allocated according to national coefficient rankings.

From Season 162, the two European cup competitions were replaced by the Euro-League, a competition for champions and high-placed teams in domestic leagues, but in Season 165 the Euro-Cup was reinstated. Qualification is for national cup winners and/or the next highest-placed clubs in each national league that did not qualify for the Euro-League; runners-up in national cup competitions do not qualify via that route, unlike in the RL Europa League. Some countries do not enter a cup winner, in which case the slot is taken by another club according to their league position.

Format

The current format of the competition is a straight knockout basis, with a preliminary round to eliminate 16 of the 80 qualifers, leaving 64 teams in the First Round. From there it is straight knockout with no further byes. Qualification for the competition is as follows:

  • Preliminary Round: 32 teams from countries 1-32
  • First Round: 16 winners from the Preliminary Round, plus 32 teams from countries 1-16 and 16 teams from countries 17-32.
